If you recently got one of the latest laptops or a MacBook Pro 2018 you will probably need a USB-C to USB adapter or a dedicated USB-C card reader to read your SD or MicroSD cards.
Some cameras also allow to wirelessly transfer data to the computer by using Wifi but this might be a slower option than transferring the data by using a card reader.
I have only tested the Satechi Aluminum Type-C USB 3.0 Micro/SD Card Reader.
The other card readers were also on my list before I made my purchase decision which was based on that I just wanted to have a very small device.
Satechi Aluminum Type-C USB 3.0 and Micro/SD Card Reader
The Satechi Type-C Card Reader is currently the card reader I am using on my MacBook Pro 2016. You can fit in both an SD card and a Micro SD card which can be used simultaneously.
Further, you can also connect it to a USB or a USB-C port which makes it quite flexible concerning the ports on your laptop.
Also if you are on a budget then this is probably a better solution than the one offered by SanDisk on the Apple website, however it is not UHS-II compliant.
USB C Hub HooToo Shuttle
The USB C Hub HooToo Shuttle was designed for the MacBook and features an HDMI video port, SD Card Reader and 3 Superspeed USB 3.0 Ports.
The HDMI port lets you directly stream 4K UHD or Full HD video to a second screen, TV or a projector. The card reader supports SD/SDHC/SDXC card of up to 2 TB.
There is also a version which is able to charge your MacBook.
Satechi Type-C USB 3.0 3 in 1 Combo Hub
The Satechi Type-C USB 3.0 Hub can charge your MacBook and converts a Type-C USB port to two USB 3.0 ports beside the card reader functionalities.
MINIX NEO C
The MINIX NEO C is also a quite versatile solution if you also need additional USB and an Ethernet port. Moreover, it has also a USB Type-C port which can charge your MacBook.
There are two models available. One model comes with HDMI output up to 4K resolution and the other model comes with a VGA output up to 1080p resolution.
Nonda USB-C to USB 3.0 Mini Adapter
If you are not planning to spend much money on a card reader or just want to use your old reader then you can also just get a USB-C to USB 3.0 adapter like the Nonda adapter.
Depending on your needs and your budget there are several solutions available to transfer your pictures and videos from your camera to your PC or MacBook.
It’s also worth to find out if your camera is able to transfer your pictures by using Wifi.
Transferring the pictures won’t be that fast as with a dedicated card reader but it’s a working solution in case you are on a budget, have no need for any other USB or Ethernet features or want to avoid additional dongles on your laptop.
I hope this blog post was helpful to find the best USB-C SD or MicroSD card reader for your MacBook Pro.And if you have some time ...
