Christmas is approaching us and I decided to write a blog post with the 12 best camping gear gift ideas for him for Christmas 2018. I have tried to select gear which can be used for hiking, backpacking, climbing, skiing, snowshoeing or packrafting so there should be something for everyone.
Last year we have visited Santa Claus in Finnish Lapland.
This book shows you America’s best hiking trails and has won several awards. This is probably a book which every hiker would like to have who is interested to hike in America.
GoPro just recently released the GoPro Hero5 Session which can record in 4K. What I like on the GoPro Hero5 Session compared to the GoPro Hero5 Black is that it’s more compact and I don’t have to pay for features which I don’t need (Location Capture, RAW images and touch display).
One of my favorite winter down jackets this year is the Rab Position jacket which weights 720 grams which has been designed for mountain and expedition use up to 6000m. This jacket has a fill power of 800.
The Fjällräven Zip Card Holder is my favorite wallet which I have always with me. The fabric is made of G-1000 – the same material which is used for their pants and jackets. So it’s quite durable.
The MSR WindBurner is my go-to stove. I have received it from MSR as a test unit and was quite happy with it on our trips e.g. in the Swedish Mountains.
The Petzl Nao Plus features 750 lumens and you are able to see 140 m into the distance. It’s reactive lightning system let’s you also adjust the light level automatically without turning or pushing any buttons on the headlamp. I also have the Petzl Nao Belt Kit, which helps to prevent battery drain if the temperatures are low. It is water resistant (IP X4) and weights 187 grams.
I have received the MSR Lightning Ascent 25 from MSR as a test unit and was quite happy with it. The main features of this snowshoe are that it is quite light (weights 1780 grams), Ergo Televators, PosiLock AT bindings (MSR’s most secure, freeze-resistant attachment) and Torsion2 crampons. Also consider to buy snowshoeing poles like the MSR Deploy T-3. MSR has sent me those poles as well for testing and they are quite good.
The Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm is my go-to sleeping pad throughout the year here in Scandinavia. It weights (410 grams) more or less the same as most other 3-season sleeping pads but can also be used during the winter.
If you are planning to hike in remote places where you won’t have a phone signal then you should consider taking a Garmin InReach Explorer+ with you. It also has a digital compass, route planning features, trip statistics, altimeter, track logging and weights 190 grams.
The Hestra Army Leather Heli 3-Finger Glove is one of the most popular Hestra gloves for skiing and is very warm. It comes with a removable liner (so you can take it out and dry it during the night) and is wind- and waterproof.
The Suunto Spartan Sport is the latest GPS watch from Suunto which comes with a color touch screen. It’s an advantage compared to the e.g. Apple Watch Series 2 is it’s long battery life so you can take it on a long trip without recharging it every few hours.
The Sawyer Water Filter is always in my backpack when I go hiking. It’s much easier to get clean water from a river than using a water filter with a pump. It’s also lighter.
I hope you were able to find an interesting Christmas gift. Merry Christmas and hope to see you on our blog again in 2017.
